1953

On a winter’s night in 1953 a combination of low pressure, strong winds and a Spring tide sent a surge of water down the East coast. Sea defenses throughout Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex were breached as the sea water reeked destruction. 307 people died plus countless livestock and buildings were lost. 71 years on and the sea continues to erode into the land, a slow-motion reenactment of that devastating night. While the concrete walls will hold steady there’s usually a way around. Some of the cliffs along this shoreline stand high in places but the crashing waves can easily break down the London? Clay soil, sometimes carrying away meters at a time.
